Coles strawberry yoghurt pouches

Reconstituted Skim Milk [Skimmed Milk, Water]= made by adding water to skim milk powder. Then add milk fat separately to achieve the desired fat levels. This enables the product to be heat treated and steralised which increases shelf life and prevents.

Fruit Puree Blend (11%) [Seedless Strawberry Pulp (49%) = puréed strawberries.

Reconstituted Apple Juice = Concentrated juice as it is much cheaper to transport and store. It does not contain the same nutritional benefits as freshly squeezed juices. A number of enzymes required for adequate food metabolism and the immune system are destroyed through the process of heating and reconstitution. Vitamin C levels are also depleted significantly, but more often than not, artificially (asorbic acid) added back by most manufacturers at a later date.

Sugar = Refined white sugar added to the product in addition to the naturally occurring sugar in lactose.

Thickner 1442 Tapioca Starch- Required to create a smooth mouthful and also helps to stabilise the product.

Natural Flavouring = Well now we know this can be absolutely anything! Natural flavour is to food what fragrance is to beauty care products. It’s in everything and we have absolutely no idea what it actually is. Natural flavours are the fourth most common food ingredient listed on food labels. Fourth! And most of us don’t even know what it is. Given this prevalence, you’d probably expect more transparency and regulations around these flavours so as consumers, we can decide whether we want to eat that food or not. And yet there isn’t.

Acidity regulators [296,331]

296 = Malic Acid

334 = Tartaric Acid

Both are prohibited in food for infants Not metabolised by the body.

*Fruit and vegetable Concentrate- Black carrot and Blackcurrant = The deep-purple colour and intense flavour of blackcurrant concentrate makes it popular for use. Blackcurrant juice concentrate is manufactured from whole, ripe blackcurrants, either fresh or frozen. Concentrate is produced by pressing the fruit to produce single strength juice. The juice is then pasteurised, filtered and partially evaporated to form a concentrate.

Cream = Used to improve texture and mouthfeel. Skimed fat layer of cows milk.

Sugar = More refined sugar

*Milk Solids = Milk solids refer to the dried powder left after all the water is removed from liquid milk. It is a good source of essential minerals and vitamins such as magnesium, calcium, zinc, potassium as well as vitamins A, D, E and K. During the evaporation process, it is ensured that these beneficial nutrients are not lost. Milk solids produce a firmer yoghurt and improve stability and nutritional value.

More Thickner 1442 Tapioca Starch- Required to create a smooth mouthful and also helps to stabilise the product.

Thickener 1401

Mineral Salt (341) = Salts of calcium and phosphoric acid. Used as a rising agent and can actually deplete calcium absorption because the calcium binds to the phosphate which can lead to calcium deficiency.

Stabilisers [406, 440]=
406 = Agar derived from red seaweed. Can cause flatulence and bloating. Prohibited in food for infants.
440 = Pectin residues from cider making and orange peels used as a thicker.

Many industries are trying for combinations of stabilisers to get added for benefits like flavor and colour enhancers.

Live Cultures = Live and active cultures in the yogurt, also called probiotics, are the healthy bacteria necessary to keep the health benefits of yogurt and keep the immune system working. The words “live and active cultures” refer to the living organisms, Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus, which convert pasteurized milk to yogurt during

*As a general rule of thumb for fruit-flavoured yoghurts, check that the total sugar content is under 12g per 100g. Anything above 6G of Sugar will be added.

Yoghurt should simply be made up of two ingredients: Pasteurised Whole Milk and Live Cultures. Modern day yoghurt has turned from a healthy snack into more of a sugary dessert containing extra ingredients such as sugar, cream, thickeners, gums, starches and flavours.

It’s hard to beat regular natural yogurt with a little raw honey.

If you were to choose a squeeze pouch, I would suggest the following brands which are the better ones.

Jalna Organic

Tamar Valley Greek Style

Five Am
Rafferty’s garden
