Lovekins Hair and Body Wash Review

Lovekins- Hair and Body wash
🔹Aqua (Water)= Water, a solvent for ingredients that do not like to dissolve in oils but rather in water. Usually number one on the ingredients list so it makes up the majority of the product. The water used in cosmetics is purified and deionized (it means that almost all of the mineral ions inside it are removed). This way, the products can stay more stable over time.
🔹 **Aloe barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice= Aloe Vera leaf juice. Skin conditioning, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and moisturising also soften the skin.
🔹 *Glycerin= Botanical source. By product of soap manufacture, Glycerol. May be animal-derived, Palm oil-derived or produced from soybeans, cane, or corn syrup (sugar or it can be manufactured synthetically. Safe for most people. Not assessed for safety in cosmetics as per CIR. Some animal studies have shown adverse effects. Best avoided if vegan. Acts as a solvent to dissolve other ingredients in the formulation. It is a colourless, odourless, viscous liquid that is sweet-tasting and non-toxic. Used to promote skin smoothness and moisture content.
🔹*Coco-Glucoside = From the condensation of coconut alcohol with glucose. Plant-based. Not assessed for safety in cosmetics.
🔹 *Propanediol = Naturally derived from corn glucose, or corn sugar. It can also be synthesised in a lab for use in personal products. Doesn’t specify if it comes from GM corn. Corn is also a heavily sprayed crop so I’d prefer to see this ingredient organic.
🔹*Lauryl Glucoside= This is a type of surfactant that works to reduce the overall viscosity of the whole product and the liquid pours better (usually liquid-based products), making it easier to use and to rinse off. Being a surfactant, they do not create foaming bubbles. Lauryl glucoside is made by combining sugar with either palm kernel oil, coconut, or corn sugar in an acidic solution to create it. Given it is plant-derived, the Environmental Working Group has rated it a low 1/10 toxicity rating.
🔹 *Decyl Glucoside = Safe and/or beneficial. Decyl glucoside is a mild non-ionic surfactant used in cosmetic formularies including baby shampoo and in products for individuals with sensitive skin. Many natural personal care companies use this cleanser because it is plant-derived, biodegradable, and gentle.
🔹 *Betaine = Compounds derived from coconut oil and dimethylaminopropylamine. Used as a surfactant to help clean and create a lather. Effects on the immune system, safe in wash-off products. Allergic reactions may cause sensitisation. The production of this surfactant is a multi-step process where chemicals are added to produce intermediary chemicals. As a result, this cleansing agent may have some contaminants in it. Specifically, 3,3-dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA) is a cause for concern even in tiny amounts because it is a sensitiser. Cocamidopropyl betaine has this contaminant, too. It is suggested not to use this ingredient on children or babies. This ingredient does have the potential for sensitisation for some people. Scientific studies have found this ingredient to be a severe eye irritant. It’s not the best, but it’s also not the worst and it has been suggested it is a better ingredient than Cocamidopropyl betaine and sits somewhere in the middle of being a low-tox ingredient.
🔹 *Cellulose gum=The most abundant organic compound on earth. Cellulose is found in the cell walls of all plants and is typically the biggest source of insoluble fibre in fruits and vegetables. Safe as used up to 20% some animal studies have shown adverse effects. Safe for most people.
🔹Terminalia ferdinandiana (Kakadu plum) Fruit Extract is derived from the fruit which is native to Australia. Extracts from the plant contain Vitamin C and have been found to offer anti-bacterial qualities. Studies suggest that this fruit is among those containing the highest levels of Vitamin C if not the highest in the world. The plant has also been known to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and deliver a substantial amount of minerals. Antioxidant, skin brightener.
🔹Tasmannia lanceolata Fruit/Leaf Extract, commonly known as Tasmanian pepperberry or mountain pepper, is a shrub native to the woodlands and cool temperate rainforests of south-eastern Australia. It is considered to be a superfood for the skin as it is rich in antioxidants which revitalise and rejuvenate the skin, treating dry, itchy and inflamed skin.
🔹Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Oil = Lavender oil is known for its relaxation, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antidepressant, antiseptic, antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, as well as antispasmodic, analgesic, detoxifying, hypotensive, and sedative effects. Distilled from the flowers of the plant.
🔹Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil = Derived from the Rosemary plant, it increases circulation and reduces inflammation.
🔹Callitris intratropica (Australian Blue Cypress) wood oil.
🔹Avena sativa (Oat) Kernel Oil = Used for its anti-inflammatory, moisturising and soothing properties on the skin. May ease a variety of skin conditions including eczema, psoriasis, acne and dry, itchy skin. I would prefer this ingredient to be organic as oats are such a heavily sprayed crop. Rich in skin-identical lipids, powerful anti-oxidants, skin-active ceramides and membrane phospholipids, it is an excellent addition to cosmetic formulations to provide reparative and protection properties. It has a high linoleic acid content recognised for establishing and maintaining the epidermal water barrier thereby improving skin barrier function. Rated a low 1 by the EWG.
🔹Chamomila recutita (Chamomile) Extract: Derived from what is commonly known as “German Chamomile,” this extract contains powerful anti-inflammatory ingredients such as Bisabolol, Chamazulene, and Apigenin. It is outstanding for soothing itchy and irritated skin.
🔹Calendula officinalis (Calendula) Extract = Plant derived. Used for its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial agents and also as a skin conditioning agent. Not expected to be harmful or toxic.
🔹Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil = Derived from the Jojoba seed. Reduces inflammation, rejuvenates skin, reduces acne, and speeds up healing.
🔹Sodium Gluconate = It is the sodium salt of gluconic acid. It’s produced by the fermentation of glucose. Non-corrosive, non-toxic and readily biodegradable. Very soluble in water
🔹*Xanthan Gum= Xantham Gum is a high molecular weight, high chain carbohydrate (polysaccharide) that is used as a natural gelling agent, emulation stabiliser, binder and viscosity regulator. Non-toxic.
🔹*Sodium Hyaluronate = A skin conditioning agent. Overall, the hazard is low. Determined safe for use in cosmetics, subject to concentration or use limitations – Safe for use in cosmetics with some qualifications.
🔹*Phospholipids = Phospholipids are major components of the plasma membrane, the outermost layer of animal cells. Like fats, they are composed of fatty acid chains attached to a glycerol backbone. Used as an emulsifier, wetting agent, and solubiliser. Natural can also mean animal-derived. It doesn’t say that this brand is vegan.
🔹Dehydroacetic Acid = A preservative that protects Go-To products from spoiling by destroying microorganisms and their growth. A synthetic chemical (no plant-based preservative that meets the efficiency standards currently exist) that is considered to be a low hazard to health. It is also biodegradable and suitable for greywater and septic tanks making it a low hazard to our environment. A fungicide and bactericide predominantly used as a preservative in cosmetics. Clinical tests showed little to no evidence regarding the ingredient’s toxicity and potential for irritation. It is often seen as the mildest preservative.
🔹Benzyl Alcohol = Preservative which protects Go-To products from spoiling by destroying microorganisms and their growth. It is a safe preservative utilised to ensure they don’t begin to grow unwanted nasties within a short period.” There is also a quote “Preservatives are Safer than Bacteria” when Benzyl Alcohol is produced by plants. It has a pleasant odour and can be found in some essential oils. It is considered a safe ingredient and helps deal with Gram+ (Staphylococcus Aerus), Gram- (such as E.Coli, and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa), fungi, and yeast. If this is not plant-derived it is generally petroleum-derived and should be avoided as it has been linked to skin dermatitis, eczema, hives and rashes.
🔹Sodium Benzoate = Petroleum derived, sodium salt of Benzoic acid. Caution is advised. Contact dermatitis, suspected liver, kidney and neurotoxicity. Suspected skin or sense organ toxicity, nettle rash or hives. Eczema and dermatitis.
🔹Potassium Sorbate= Potassium sorbate is a salt of sorbic acid which is naturally found in some fruits (like the berries of mountain Ash) although a disclaimer does state [While sorbic acid is naturally occurring in some berries, virtually all of the world’s production of sorbic acid, from which potassium sorbate is derived, is manufactured synthetically] on the EWG site it confirms that it’s not likely to be made from Mountain berries.- Potassium sorbate is a potassium salt of sorbic acid, a naturally occurring anti microbial compound; used as a preservative. Which means it’s synthetic. Its function is as a fragrance ingredient/preservative. Known for contact dermatitis and skin and eye irritation. The EWG rates this as a moderate hazard.
🔹 *Citric acid= I have a feeling here that despite saying their citrus acid is “naturally derived” this still means it is fermented using Aspergillus niger or Candida sp. From different sources of carbohydrates, such as molasses and starch-based media.
🔹Parfum (Natural)= It does not specify what is in Natural Parfum. Maybe essential oils? Their website states: We use 100 per cent pure essential oils which are grown and processed without the use of synthetic chemicals.
*Naturally derived **Organic #Wildcrafted
🔸Lots of ingredients for baby body wash and shampoo. Yes most of the ingredients are naturally derived until you reach the preservatives. I wouldn’t choose to use this product on my kids. Some brands that I would recommend are:
